BURTON — Cooler Security Advisors, LLC, a security advising company, is now open for business in Burton. Owner Tony Fedewa consults for security, primarily for the entertainment industry.

“What I do is consult for entertainers and event venues,” said Fedewa, who recently consulted for bigname bands. “I will be doing the security consulting for the upcoming 2012-2013 Rush tour.”

Former military policing is on Fedewa’s list of credentials.

“I did personal protection in Panama during the invasion,” he said of the 1989 U.S. military operation in that Central American nation where dictator Manuel Noriega was ousted from power ands arrested by U.S. forces for drug trafficking.

When asked why people need a security consultant Fedewa said, “It specializes in providing safety and security standards which are often overlooked.”

Risk assessments for home security or personal protection issues are also part of the job.

As a father of an Atherton High School student, Fedewa said he tries to focus on the school systems, the safety and security in the schools and at school events.

“I try to give some guidance and support,” he said.

and their clients.” Those involved on the project have high hopes that this new website could become a major resource for both the individual and the security consulting industry.

Cooler Security Advisors has compiled some information that is useful for parents to defend their children from predators. Being informed about the tactics used by abusers and predators will make it significantly less likely that your child will be abducted or abused. Learning and using these tactics will help to ease your anxiety and secure your children.

General Safety Tips for Kids

• Never accept rides from anyone unless your parents personally tell you too, even if they call you by your name (Kids sometimes wear clothing such as jerseys or backpacks with names or other identifying information on it)
• Never go places alone, always ask permission to leave the yard or before going to someone else’s house
• Pick out a special code word to convey a message from another parent or guardian if a change of plans is required and direct contact is not possible
• Never accept rides with other people unless your parent has directly told you to
• It’s okay for you to be insistent when saying no when someone makes you feel uncomfortable in any way, even if they are friends or relatives

Bus Safety Tips

• Always report to your parents and bus driver if you are ever concerned for your safety any time, whether approached by a stranger or any other suspicious activity
• Talk to friends and neighbors along the bus route to set up safe houses if there is ever an emergency
• Parents should know the way children take to and from the bus stop, kids should avoid paths through the woods, alleys, parks or generally any area will they will be alone and vulnerable
• If threatened always run, especially if they have a weapon, throw books, yell and cause a big of a scene as possible
• Never go with an abductor, chances of a good outcome are greatly reduced after being abducted

Avoiding and Escaping Capture

• Use all means at your disposal to get away from a potential abductor, yell, scream, bite, scratch, kick, no matter what they say run
• If the assailant is in a vehicle run the opposite way the car is facing to an identified safe house, force them to turn around to chase you
• If you are being pulled or grabbed grip onto whatever you can whether it is your bike, a street light, garbage barrel or mail box all while screaming for help
• When a gun is pointed at you run immediately! Firing a gun attracts attention that most kidnappers will want to avoid and it is both unlikely that they will fire or that they will hit you especially if you are a moving target, either way it is better to be wounded at get help from those around you then being abducted
• Never eat or drink anything a kidnapper or potential kidnapper gives you it is likely to be drugged
• If you are taken into a vehicle try to get into the backseat and jump out the rear doors, honk the horn, push the accelerator, anything to escape – constantly be trying to escape
• Parents and children should discuss and practice these tactics

Sexual Predators and ‘Grooming’

Child molestors use a process called grooming in order to increases the predator’s access to his victim and decreases the chances of discovery by parents or law enforcement. It involves using coercion and manipulation to target vulnerable children for sexual activity. There are a number of warning signs that parents can watch out for and prevent this from happening to children. Here are the basics steps a predator will use to groom a child, be aware of this process so you can spot it!

• Gaining a child’s confidence with gifts, pretending to share common interests, giving rides, flattery
• Attempting to gain the family or care givers’ trust (single parents are prime targets)
• Inappropriate boundaries with the child, escalating physical contact
• Creating secrecy with the child
• Threating to harm the child if they do not go along
