TAKE STEPS TO AVOID BEING A VICTIM OF CRIME

  • Be alert, stay vigilant and observant of your surroundings.
  • Be aware of the people around you, assess potential threats and take steps to avoid confrontation.
  • Learn self-defense, knowing how to defend yourself will prepare you and give you the confidence to handle yourself if all else fails.
  • Avoid the locations and situations which make you a target, such as being alone in dark alley ways and parking lots at night.

IN THE OFFICE

  • Never leave your purse or wallet in plain view, most criminals are opportunists.
  • Clearly mark your personal property, this can be useful in recovery of items.
  • Do not leave cash or valuables at the office, this is an easily addressed vulnerability.
  • If you work late, find a coworker or a security guard to walk you out, this will reduce your likelihood of being attacked greatly.
  • Be aware of escape routes for emergencies, always know your way out.

RESIDENTIAL SECURITY

Home

  • Use high quality locks on all entrances, including service doors and gates.
  • Don’t leave keys “hidden” outside of your home. Criminals often gain unfettered access by watching you to see where you hide them.
  • Install locks on all your fuse boxes or power panel and other external power sources.
  • If your have bars on your windows, review fire safety and escape routes with your family.
  • If you have security alarms, check and use them. They are ineffective if you don’t.
  • Keep at least one fire extinguisher on each floor, in addition to one in the kitchen.
  • Regularly check smoke detectors, set a regular date you will remember to replace batteries.
  • Vary daily routines and avoid predictable behavior patterns.
  • Know where your family members are at all times in case an emergency does occur.

SECURITY FOR CHILDREN

  • Teach your children to never answer the door for strangers or to let them know that they are home alone.
  • Children should know local emergency phone numbers or how to dial 911, post them near the phone.
  • Children, even young ones, should know their name, address and phone number. Carrying a card with this information is a good idea.
  • Caution teenagers about “blind dates” or meeting someone they do not know or meeting someone they have met on the internet.
  • Let children know they should not give out personal information, such as home address, absence of adults, etc. over the phone or internet.
  • Teach children to say no to strangers or even people they know if they are uncomfortable with the situation.
  • Teach children how to get out of the house and where to go in case of an emergency. Find a neighbor or trusted close by business they can plan on going to.

You are responsible first and foremost for your own security and that of your family! Simple preventive measures are the most effective ones!
